Movie night was a huge success. We haven’t had that many models on the contest table in a long time. And not only were there a lot of entries, there were a lot of incredibly well done entries. Judging wasn’t an easy task. In the end it came down to two winners, as it always must (well, not always, but there were only two prizes up for grabs). First place went to John Bucholz with his scratch-built Slave 1 from “The Empire Strikes Back”. I’m not sure of the scale of the model, but it was no more than an inch from top to bottom, and consisted of over 100 parts. Stunning work. Second place went to “Big Bill” Schwarz and his Bruce diorama, from the movie “Jaws”. Bill took the great white kit model from Pegasus and modified it to a surface-broaching appearance, and then put the kit’s diver figure in the mouth — and in the water (basically, it wasn’t a good day for the diver).
Next month is Russian Night, November is WWI Night.
The September 2013 edition of the MosquitoGram has been uploaded to the Newsletter page.
A reminder that next Friday through Sunday is the Jersey Fest show. Check out their website for all details HERE (or by clicking the image to the left).
This coming Friday the 13th is the monthly meeting. Bring an appetite, as dinner will be served.
We had good attendance at the August meeting for Pearl Harbor night. The entries skewed heavily in the favor of the Japanese with multiple Zeros, Vals, etc. on the table, and only two U.S. subjects (U.S.S. Arizona and a hula girl). Art Doran, the sponsor of the contest, awarded the prize for the Air category to Pat O’Connor for his 1/48th scale Val dive bomber, and Jerry Rinaldi took the award in Land and Sea for his hula girl figure.
The next meeting is in September on Friday the 13th. There will be a grill set up in the parking lot for a cook out, and the eboard will be cooking for the club members.
The July meeting was all about the quarter midget race car builds. Several other nice in-progress and finished kits of the air and sea variety also graced the tables. Photos below.
August is Pearl Harbor night. Aircraft, ships, Japanese and American. Bring what you’ve got!
The June 2013 meeting went off without a hitch. North Africa Night saw a limited turn out, but the quality of the work more than made up for the lack of entries. The meeting portion of the night saw mention of the Quarter Midget racecar group build for next month, and the discussion of the next group build, which may be 1/350th scale destroyers or other small escorts (the new 1/350th scale Flower class corvettes look very nice, and are inexpensive).
Below is a slideshow of the entries on the table, and other kits brought along to showcase the in-progress on some. *NOTE*: One of the photos features nudity. If small scale representations of naked flesh offend you, then look away.
There was no specific contest for the May 2013 NJIPMS meeting, resulting in an open contest, which we’ll have the results of next month.
We were all saddened to learn of the passing of club member Rich Zaris, who passed away unexpectedly after a short battle with cancer on May 15th. Rich’s 1/72 Heller Javelin was on the table, along with a photo of him. He will be missed.
The April 12th meeting had a high turn-out. Dinner was served, ribs and fried chicken. The tone was low-key, however, and the contest an open one, as everyone recovered from, and recounted MosquitoCon experiences. Actual numbers of attendees, kits, etc., will be discussed at the May meeting, but suffice it to say both are well into the hundreds as is the norm for MCon.
We’re still working to process all of the photos, and should have the contest winners posted, and all photos ready within a week or two. Until then, here’s what was on the table at last week’s meeting.
The theme for the March 2013 meeting was “Heavy Metal”. Basically if it was large, heavy, metal or, (in the case of KISS), ostentatious, it qualified. At the end of the evening, Stan Stankewicz had taken the Air category with his P-47, and Marc Rocca won the Land and Sea group with his Panther.
Our January meeting this year was all about Science Fiction. Hosted by Jon Da Silva, the turnout was high and the quality of the builds was even higher. It was a tough decision, but John Bucholz ended up taking the top prize for the night, with his amazingly tiny Star War scratch builds.
